種の実在論はどういう主張か

さいきんは種の実在論について考えることが多いが、これがむつかしい。だいたい種の実在論の主張をはっきりさせることもなかなか難しい。たとえば、いわゆる「種の実在論」は、「種が実在する」とだけ主張しているのではない。たとえば以下のような議論を考えてみる（以下自分用に書いたメモを引用します。コメントは日本語でかまいません）。

(P1) All sets are real (sets exist).
(P2) Species taxa are sets.
(C) Therefore, species are real.

This argument is valid. Let us assume all premises are true. But this argument may not be what biologists who support for species realists want. If this argument is sound, then many things other than individual organisms and species, because (P2) make every set real. Among them, for example, is a set

{George W. Bush, e, Mona Lisa}.

No biologist would think this set exists in the same sense as Homo sapiens does. If this argument is sound, then species are real. But it does not fit the interests of biologists.

A lesson from this: species realism is not the same as the claim that species exist.

新種概念

生物学の哲学ブログで有名なEvolving thoughtsによると、新たな種概念がまた提起されたそうだ。それによると種は

"a group of genetically compatible interbreeding natural populations that is genetically isolated from other such groups."

まだ本体の論文は読んでいないが、とりあえずの問題点はJohn Wilkinsがまとめている。この段階で気になる点といえばGenealogical Species ConceptやGenotypic Cluster Species Conceptとどう違うのかという点である。
